Meet Chanachen — The Village Growing Change, Naturally

I’m Pema Lhaden, Senior Agriculture Extension Supervisor in Gelling Gewog, Chhukha Dzongkhag. I
lead the planning and execution of agriculture programs at the grassroots level, working closely with
farmers to boost productivity, sustainability, and food security.

One of my proudest initiatives is Chanchen village—our model organic hub. We’ve introduced a range
of interventions to promote eco-friendly farming, improve soil health, and empower local communities
through organic practices. It’s a living example of how tradition and innovation can thrive together.

With a passion for rural development and hands-on support, I strive to make agriculture not just a
livelihood, but a source of pride and resilience for our farmers.

Chanachen Model Organic Village, Gelling Gewog, Chhukha Dzongkhag

Chanachen, a serene village nestled under Gelling Gewog in Chhukha Dzongkhag, is emerging as a
trailblazer in Bhutan’s organic farming movement. Located across the Wangchhu River near the
Chhukha Hydroelectric Power Plant, the village is accessible via a 10-kilometer farm road and situated
at an elevation of 2,300 meters above sea level. Home to 22 households, Chanachen spans 130 acres
of fertile agricultural land.

The community practices diverse crop cultivation—paddy, wheat, maize, mustard, buckwheat, quinoa,
vegetables, fruits, and nuts—primarily for household use, with surplus produce sold in local markets.
True to its organic ethos, no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used. Thanks to ongoing support from
National Centre for Organic Agriculture and the Dzongkhag Agriculture Office, Chanachen has earned
its place as a recognized Model Organic Village within the Dzongkhag.

Sun Smile Project – Chanachen Village Focus

Launched on January 20, 2025, the Sun Smile Project is a Ministry-level initiative with Chanachen at
its heart. The project began with a meeting involving the village’s organic farming group, outlining its
goal to increase crop productivity by 30% over a three-year period.

During the second visit by project officials, farmers were introduced to successful organic farming
practices from Japan, supported by visual documentation. A key insight shared was the importance of
nursery preparation, which can influence 50–60% of crop yield. Field visits followed, where farmers
received guidance on improving chilli cultivation—specifically, adopting low-density planting for
healthier fruiting.

From the upcoming season, chilli crops will be grown following expert recommendations to compare
yield outcomes. Additionally, the community proposed improvement of the existing organic market
outlet along the highway, marked with vibrant flags to attract travelers. This idea was well received by
local sellers, who anticipate improved visibility and sales.

Looking Ahead

Currently its in startup phase, the Sun Smile Project is expected to bring a wave of innovation to
Chanachen. The community looks forward to technological interventions, capacity-building programs,
farmer exchange visits, and value-added product development. With these initiatives, Chanachen
continues to grow—not just crops, but a sustainable future rooted in organic excellence.
