@borganic.project Growing organic is one challenge. Finding a market for it is another. For organic farmers, the work doesn’t end with the harvest. Limited market space, fewer customers, additional costs, and the challenge of earning a fair price are realities they continue to face. Yet they continue—protecting their soil, following organic practices, and believing that the opportunities for organic farming will grow. As consumers, we have a role too. When we choose organic, visit organic markets, talk to farmers, and understand why organic produce may cost more, we give farmers a reason to keep going. The National Centre for Organic Agriculture (NCOA) is the apex body for coordinating and facilitating the overall development of organic plans and programs in the country. The centre is also responsible for the regulation and certification of organic farms in accordance with the Bhutan Organic Guarantee System (BOGS) and the Local Organic Assurance System (LOAS). It is administratively under the Agriculture Research and Innovation Division (ARID) of Department of Agriculture (DoA).
The centre focuses on achieving a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive organic agriculture system that ensures food and nutrition security, environmental conservation, and improved livelihoods for Bhutanese farmers. In collaboration with the Bhutan Organic Project (BOP) team, NCOA aspires to create greater awareness on organic farming, develop simple and low-cost input technologies, and promote their adoption among farmers to improve productivity and enhance livelihoods of smallholder farmers of Bhutan, thereby contributing to sustainable agriculture, food and nutrition security, environmental conservation, and inclusive rural development.
